Ayanava Sil: Street Photography Beyond Chasing Moments

Kolkata-born photographer Ayanava Sil’s journey into the evocative world of street photography began not with an ambitious quest for recognition, but with a nascent curiosity, a common thread weaving through the stories of many self-taught artists in this dynamic genre. What started as an exploration of his camera’s capabilities, fueled by a desire to capture more compelling images, has blossomed into a profound artistic practice. Sil’s evolution from casually documenting family events to becoming a recognized visual storyteller highlights a shift from simply recording fleeting instances to crafting narratives that resonate with depth and emotion.

The initial spark for Sil was akin to that experienced by many who discover photography without formal training. It was a process of gradual immersion, where the camera, initially a novel tool, transformed into an extension of his vision, a conduit for expressing his unique perspective on the world around him. This organic development, marked by experimentation and a relentless pursuit of technical proficiency, is a hallmark of self-taught photographers who often forge their paths through sheer dedication and a deep-seated passion.

From Technical Curiosity to Visual Storytelling

Sil’s early forays into photography were driven by a desire to understand the mechanics of his equipment. “I began experimenting on my own and watching YouTube videos to learn more about the technical side of photography,” he recalls. A significant influence during this formative period was the popular YouTube channel DigitalRev TV, particularly its charismatic host Kai Wong. Wong’s energetic and humorous camera reviews, often filmed while navigating the bustling streets of Hong Kong and capturing candid moments, provided Sil with a blueprint for observing and documenting without intrusion. “I was drawn to his humorous and energetic style as he reviewed cameras while walking through the streets of Hong Kong and capturing candid moments. Through his videos, I learned how to capture natural moments without disturbing the scene or making people uncomfortable,” Sil explains. This early exposure to techniques that prioritized authenticity and respect for subjects laid a crucial foundation for his future work.

However, the true paradigm shift in Sil’s understanding of street photography occurred with his discovery of APF Street Photography Magazine. This platform introduced him to the concept of visual storytelling as a discipline far exceeding mere documentation. Through the magazine’s curated content, Sil began to grasp how photographers worldwide could elevate ordinary street scenes into profound narratives through meticulous timing, keen observation, and the infusion of emotion. This realization marked a transition from a focus on technical perfection to an appreciation for the conceptual and emotional dimensions of an image.

The Transformative Influence of Local Vision

A pivotal moment in Sil’s artistic development arrived with his encounter with the work of fellow Kolkata street photographer Soumya Shankar Ghosal. Ghosal’s photographs resonated deeply with Sil because they depicted the very city he knew intimately—the streets he had traversed since childhood. “His photographs stayed with me because he was photographing the same city I knew so well, the streets I had grown up around and walked through every day,” Sil notes. This realization was profoundly liberating, challenging his prior assumption that compelling photographic subjects were exclusively found in exotic or distant locales. “Until then, I believed I had to travel somewhere special to find something worth photographing.”

This encounter ignited a full-fledged passion for street photography, transforming his initial curiosity into a profound love affair with the medium. He recognized that the urban landscape was a fertile ground for an endless stream of unexpected and ever-changing scenes, a realization that instilled in him the imperative to remain present and observant.

The Discipline of Presence and Reflection

Sil attributes a significant portion of his growth as a self-taught street photographer to the simple yet vital practice of consistent shooting. This routine transcended mere technical practice; it became a crucible for learning and refinement. By immersing himself in the act of photographing, Sil found he could learn from his missteps, analyze what worked and what didn’t, and meticulously track his artistic progress. The sheer volume of images produced provided a rich dataset for self-reflection and critical evaluation.

One of the most significant lessons he learned was the value of patience. “One of the biggest lessons for me has been learning to slow down. When I first started, I was always looking for dramatic moments and often took far too many photographs. I was also heavily influenced by photographers I admired, and sometimes I tried too hard to photograph in a style that resembled theirs,” he confesses. This period of introspection led him to a more nuanced understanding of the genre: “With time, I began to understand that street photography is not always about chasing a moment. Sometimes, it is about finding a promising scene and waiting for something to happen within it.” This shift from active pursuit to patient observation is a testament to his evolving artistic maturity.

Composition as a Language of Storytelling

For Sil, street photography is an ongoing process of discovery and evolution. He embraces the natural development of his style, eschewing rigid creative formulas. A constant in his approach, however, is the unwavering commitment to imbue his work, whether street or documentary, with an artistic sensibility. “I feel that an artistic approach can give an ordinary moment more life and make the photograph more engaging,” he asserts. This artistic inclination allows him to transform fleeting glimpses of life into compelling narratives, transcending the status of mere snapshots.

Composition plays a paramount role in his visual storytelling. Sil strives for frames that are both clean and purposeful, creating compositions that are strong and free from distractions. This deliberate approach guides the viewer’s attention to the essential elements of the image, enabling him to interpret and convey the intrinsic character of a place. “I like to spend time in places where life naturally unfolds, like markets, river ghats, small alleys, festivals, events, or even quiet residential streets. I walk, observe, and try to understand the character of a place before I begin taking photographs,” he explains. This preparatory phase of immersion is critical to his process, allowing him to connect with the essence of his subject matter before engaging with the camera.

The Power of Curiosity in Every Frame

Sil’s criterion for an ideal street photograph is elegantly simple: it must spark curiosity. This doesn’t necessitate an extraordinary event, but rather an image that compels him to pause and re-examine it. “There should be something in the photograph, a strong composition, a connection between elements, an emotion, or a sense of mystery, that makes me curious,” he elaborates. This curiosity can extend to prompting questions about the moments preceding or following the captured instant, inviting viewers to engage in their own interpretations. “I think that openness is an important part of a strong street photograph,” he concludes, emphasizing the value of ambiguity and viewer participation.

This interplay of openness and curiosity forms the bedrock of Sil’s creative process. His receptiveness to the unfolding narratives of the street allows for a profound engagement with his work, both as a creator and an observer. The enduring resonance of his photographs is a testament to this philosophy: “Sometimes I make a photograph and, even years later, I can still remember exactly where I was standing, what I saw, and what I felt at that moment. When a photograph continues to hold a memory long after I have made it, I know I have captured something meaningful.”

India’s Vibrant Tapestry: A Photographer’s Muse

India, with its unparalleled vibrancy, energy, and complexity, offers a rich and inexhaustible canvas for photographers. Sil considers himself fortunate to experience the immense diversity present across the country’s myriad languages, rhythms, traditions, communities, and visual characters. “Even within the same city, I can walk from one street to another and feel as though I have entered a completely different world,” he remarks.

While acknowledging that every location possesses its unique visual language, Sil highlights India’s distinctive blend of extraordinary diversity, emotional expressiveness, social intricacies, and the sheer volume of unfolding stories as particularly captivating. “What makes India distinctive for me is the combination of its incredible diversity, emotional openness, social complexity, and the sheer number of stories unfolding around me. Perhaps that is what I love most about photographing India; there is always another story happening just outside the frame. You simply have to be there and notice it.”

This inherent diversity necessitates a sensitive approach from a documentary and street photographer. Sil emphasizes the importance of respect, viewing individuals not merely as subjects but as integral participants in their daily lives. This ethical stance ensures that his photographs convey a profound sense of humanity, rather than focusing solely on aesthetic appeal.

Culture and tradition are intrinsically woven into the fabric of Sil’s street photography, shaped by his upbringing in Kolkata amidst its diverse festivals, rituals, and practices. He views tradition not as a separate subject but as an inseparable element of everyday existence in India. “It lives on the streets, in the way people dress, work, pray, celebrate, travel, and interact with each other. What I find particularly fascinating about India is the way the past and the present constantly exist together. You can see something that has been part of people’s lives for generations happening right next to something completely modern. That contrast creates so many interesting visual and human stories for me.” This constant dialogue between the past and the present provides a unique visual grammar that deeply influences his perception and photographic choices.

Awards as a By-Product, Not the Goal

For many artists, awards represent the ultimate validation of their craft. However, Sil maintains a pragmatic perspective, believing that the primary motivation for creating photographs should never be the pursuit of accolades. “The moment I start asking myself, ‘Will this photograph win something?’ I feel that I stop seeing honestly. For me, the work always has to come first,” he states firmly.

His focus remains steadfastly on the present moment, seeking genuine connections with his subjects. Even when he believes he has captured a satisfactory image, he continues to explore, observe, and strive for something more profound. This relentless pursuit, he suggests, is fueled by a persistent hunger: “I think that hunger to find the next photograph keeps me curious and prevents me from becoming satisfied too quickly.”

Sil’s numerous awards are a testament to his dedication and honest approach. While he expresses gratitude for the recognition, he views it not as definitive proof of success but as reassurance that his stories resonate with others. “Ultimately, I see awards as a by-product of the work, not the reason for making it. I continue to photograph for the same reason I started: I enjoy taking pictures, I enjoy the process of looking and discovering, and I want to create photographs that I will still care about many years from now.”

"Poetry of the Ordinary": A Landmark Series

Among his body of work, one photograph from his ongoing series, "Poetry of the Ordinary," holds particular significance. Created during the pandemic lockdown, this image represents a departure from his usual focus on human subjects and external environments. “I took it one evening when the light caught my attention and made me look at my surroundings in a completely different way. Until then, as a street and documentary photographer, I had been mainly interested in photographing people and what was happening outside. I had rarely considered photographing an ordinary space without anyone in it,” he explains. This photograph marked a profound shift in his perspective, revealing the visual richness within familiar domestic spaces.

The image taught him a crucial lesson: “photography does not always need an extraordinary place, an important event, or a dramatic human moment. Sometimes, all you need is the willingness to look at something familiar in a different way.” This realization gained even greater weight in 2021 when legendary American street photographer Joel Meyerowitz saw the photograph and described it as “the kind of picture I felt I could live with.” Meyerowitz’s affirmation, from a photographer whose work Sil deeply admires, reinforced his commitment to capturing the profound beauty inherent in everyday life. While not necessarily his "best" photograph, it remains one of the most cherished, serving as a constant reminder that meaningful visual narratives often lie hidden in the most familiar of places, waiting to be discovered through a new lens.

Varanasi: A Dream Project of Immersion

Sil harbors a long-held ambition to embark on an extensive documentary project focused on Varanasi, the ancient spiritual capital of India. This endeavor aligns perfectly with his interests in people, culture, tradition, spirituality, daily life, and the passage of time. He envisions a project that goes beyond fleeting visits, involving a prolonged immersion across different seasons to capture the city’s dynamic transformations.

“I have visited Varanasi twice, and although both visits were relatively short, I felt that the city was an extraordinary place for a street and documentary photographer. There is something happening on almost every corner. You see children playing on the ghats, priests performing rituals, families celebrating, pilgrims praying, and cremations taking place nearby. Life and death, joy and sorrow, celebration and grief all exist side by side. That contrast fascinates me deeply,” he elaborates.

Sil is drawn to Varanasi’s palpable sense of timelessness, where ancient traditions coexist with the ebb and flow of modern life. He understands that this project will be a significant undertaking, potentially spanning years, but it is precisely this depth and commitment that excite him. “I would rather spend years building one meaningful body of work than rush to create a quick impression. I want to give the city enough time to speak, and be patient enough to listen.” This philosophy underscores his dedication to creating enduring bodies of work that offer profound insights rather than superficial observations.

Ayanava Sil’s photographic journey exemplifies a profound evolution from technical exploration to a deeply philosophical engagement with the world. His commitment to honest observation, patient storytelling, and the pursuit of curiosity continues to shape his art, inviting viewers to see the poetry in the ordinary and the enduring narratives that unfold on the streets.
